Outdoor kitchens have become one of the most requested hardscape projects in the North Atlanta area. With a climate that supports outdoor cooking and dining from March through November, it is easy to see why homeowners in Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, and Dunwoody are investing in these spaces. But outdoor kitchen costs vary enormously based on scope, materials, and features, which makes budgeting difficult without a clear framework.

This guide breaks down 2026 pricing into three tiers so you can understand what to expect at each level and plan accordingly.

Outdoor Kitchen Cost by Tier

TierPrice RangeWhat You Get
Basic$5,000 - $15,000Built-in grill island, countertop, paver or stone base
Mid-Range$15,000 - $35,000L-shape or U-shape, multiple appliances, stone veneer, lighting
Premium$35,000 - $80,000+Full kitchen with refrigeration, sink, pizza oven, covered structure

These ranges include the kitchen structure, hardscape base, and basic utility connections. They do not include major patio construction, which is a separate scope. If you need a new patio built as the foundation for your outdoor kitchen, plan for that as an additional cost. Our paver patio cost guide covers those numbers in detail.

What Is Included at Each Tier

Basic Outdoor Kitchen ($5,000 - $15,000)

A basic outdoor kitchen is typically a single grill island, 6 to 8 feet long, with a built-in gas grill and a small countertop area for prep and serving. The island structure is built from concrete block or steel framing, finished with stone veneer or stucco, and topped with granite, quartzite, or concrete countertops.

At this level, you get:

  • Built-in grill (drop-in unit, gas line connection)
  • 6-8 linear feet of counter space
  • Stone or stucco veneer on the island base
  • Granite or comparable countertop
  • Basic low-voltage lighting

This is a great option for homeowners who want to upgrade from a freestanding grill to something permanent without a major investment. It works well on an existing patio or as an addition to a new paver patio project.

Mid-Range Outdoor Kitchen ($15,000 - $35,000)

The mid-range tier is where outdoor kitchens start to feel like real cooking spaces. An L-shaped or U-shaped layout gives you more counter area and room for additional appliances. This tier typically includes:

  • Built-in grill with side burner
  • Outdoor-rated refrigerator or beverage cooler
  • 12-20 linear feet of counter space
  • Higher-end stone veneer (natural stone, Belgard block, or premium manufactured stone)
  • Granite, quartzite, or porcelain slab countertops
  • Integrated LED lighting
  • Electrical outlets for appliances
  • Gas line and potentially a water line for a prep sink

This is the most popular tier we build in the Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, and Roswell areas. It hits the sweet spot between functionality and budget, giving you a legitimate cooking and entertaining space without the cost of a full premium build.

Premium Outdoor Kitchen ($35,000 - $80,000+)

Premium outdoor kitchens are full exterior cooking and entertaining environments. They often include a covered roof structure (pergola, pavilion, or extension of the home’s roofline), which adds weather protection and allows for ceiling fans, mounted lighting, and audio systems. At this level, expect:

  • Professional-grade grill (36” or 42”)
  • Wood-fired pizza oven or smoker
  • Full sink with hot and cold water, drainage
  • Outdoor-rated dishwasher
  • Built-in refrigerator and ice maker
  • Extensive counter space and storage
  • Premium natural stone or porcelain veneer
  • Slab countertops (leathered granite, quartzite, or soapstone)
  • Covered structure with fan, lighting, and possibly heating
  • Outdoor audio integration
  • Smart lighting controls

Premium builds are common in Milton, Johns Creek, and Buckhead, where property values support the investment and homeowners are creating true outdoor living rooms adjacent to pools and fire features.

Material Options for the Kitchen Base and Surroundings

The paver or stone surface around and beneath your outdoor kitchen matters as much as the kitchen itself. Common options include:

  • Concrete pavers: The most practical choice for the surrounding patio. Durable, repairable, and available in styles that complement any kitchen design. $12-$25 per square foot installed.
  • Natural stone: Flagstone, travertine, or bluestone create a high-end look. $20-$40 per square foot installed.
  • Porcelain pavers: Stain-resistant and heat-tolerant, making them well-suited for cooking areas. $15-$30 per square foot installed.

For the kitchen island veneer, the most popular choices in our market are natural stone ledge (Tennessee fieldstone, Georgia granite), manufactured stone veneer, and Belgard block products that match the surrounding patio pavers.

Appliance Considerations

Outdoor appliances need to be rated for outdoor use. Using indoor appliances outdoors voids warranties and creates safety hazards. Here are typical costs for quality outdoor-rated appliances:

  • Built-in grill: $1,500-$5,000 (mid-range brands like Blaze, Bull, or Summerset)
  • Outdoor refrigerator: $800-$2,500
  • Side burner: $400-$1,200
  • Pizza oven: $2,000-$6,000
  • Sink and faucet: $300-$800 (plus plumbing)
  • Outdoor dishwasher: $800-$1,500

We recommend choosing your appliances before finalizing the kitchen design, not after. Appliance dimensions, utility requirements, and ventilation clearances all affect the island layout. Designing the island first and then trying to fit appliances into it leads to compromises.

Atlanta Building Code Considerations

Outdoor kitchen construction in the metro Atlanta area involves several code considerations:

Gas lines must be installed by a licensed plumber and inspected. Natural gas is the standard in most North Atlanta neighborhoods. If your gas meter does not have sufficient capacity to feed both your indoor appliances and an outdoor grill plus burner, you may need a meter upgrade through Atlanta Gas Light. This can take 2-4 weeks to schedule.

Electrical work requires a licensed electrician and permit for new circuits. GFCI protection is required for all outdoor outlets. If your outdoor kitchen includes a covered structure, additional electrical for lighting and fans will be needed.

Setback requirements vary by jurisdiction. Most municipalities in Fulton and Forsyth counties require that permanent structures be set back a minimum distance from property lines. A freestanding grill island is usually treated differently than a roofed structure, so check with your local building department.

HOA restrictions are common in North Atlanta subdivisions. Many HOAs have rules about outdoor structures, building materials, and even the height of outdoor kitchens. Get HOA approval before investing in detailed design work.

Best Time to Plan and Build

If you want your outdoor kitchen ready for summer entertaining, start the planning process in late winter or early spring. Here is a realistic timeline:

  • Design and material selection: 2-4 weeks
  • Permitting (if needed): 2-4 weeks
  • Appliance ordering and delivery: 2-8 weeks (some items have lead times)
  • Construction: 2-4 weeks depending on complexity

Starting in March or April for a June completion is a reasonable target for a mid-range build. Premium builds with covered structures and multiple trades may take longer. The worst time to start is May or June, when contractors are at peak demand and lead times stretch out.

Making the Investment

An outdoor kitchen is both a lifestyle upgrade and a financial investment. In the North Atlanta market, where outdoor living is central to how people use their homes, well-built outdoor kitchens recover 40-70% of their cost at resale while providing years of daily enjoyment.
